It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, and grandfather, Robert Edward Steele, 73, on Saturday, Oct., 17, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born Jan. 13, 1942, in Sydney, Bob was the son of Harry Arthur Steele and Catherine (Chiasson) Steele.
As a devoted "Pepere" he enjoyed all of his grandchildren's athletic pursuits such as hockey, football, soccer and swimming. He and Josie spent many years camping in East Bay, Louisbourg and Whycocomagh, they enjoyed wonderful times with the Antique Car Club and their 1953 Ford.
Bob led a very full life of family, friends, and service to the community and was involved with various organizations such as being an officer with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. He was a member of the Sydney Steel Pensioners Club, he was also a 25-year volunteer fireman with the Grand Lake Fire Department. He was a devoted worker and member for St. Augustine's Catholic Church.
Robert is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Josephine 'Josie' (Shomph) Steele; daughters, Karen English (Eric Whebby), Bedford, Brenda Steele (Raymond Poirier), Sydney; grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah and Paige English, Bedford; siblings, Anne Falconer (Doug), Sydney, John Steele (Caroline), Vernon, B.C., Rose Steele Bilot (Bob), Calgary, Alta., Leonard Chiasson (Linda), Sydney River, and his loyal furry companion, Crosby.
Visitation will take place at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and again on Wednesday, Oct, 21, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015 at St. Theresa’s Parish at 11 a.m. with Fr. Dennis Lamey officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
