With great sadness, the family of Charles Holmes, 66, of Sydney Mines, announce his sudden passing on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by those he loved.
Born in North Sydney, Charles was the son of the late Charles and Jean (MacLean) Holmes.
Charles was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where he was active in many facets of the church. He was a member of the Board of Managers for 27 years, and over the years served as secretary, treasurer and chairman. He was a member of the choir for several decades. He was the Sesquicentennial Coordinator for the church’s 150th anniversary.
Charles graduated with a B.A. from Gordon College, Wenham, Massachusetts, a B.Ed., and a M.Ed. from Acadia University, Wolfville, N.S. Charles began his 31-year teaching career at Sydney Mines High, and then moved to Memorial High School. He was a classroom teacher. Later a vice-principal, and retired as Social Science and Fine Arts Department Head. Charles always spoke so highly of the wonderful students he had the opportunity to teach.
Charles was a world traveller, and truly enjoyed a global horizon. He worked in the travel industry for more than 20 years, and was employed with Maritime Travel as a travel counsellor. Charles enjoyed helping clients plan their vacations, and took pleasure in escorting groups on cruises and bus tours. Recently, he enjoyed employment with travel companies based in Boston and Halifax.
Charles is survived by his sister, Lorna Holmes, Sydney Mines; his uncle, Rev. Sam Holmes, Ottawa, and a number of cousins.

Visitation for Charles Holmes will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, from 2-4 &7-9 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate Charles’ life will take place Sunday, at 3 p.m. in St, Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Marion Barclay MacKay officiating. The burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Donations in memory of Charles may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, or a charity of one’s choice.
