It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, John Lee, age 97.
Johnny passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side Oct. 31, 2015, at Taigh Na Mara, where he had been a resident for the the last eight months.
Born in Glace Bay, Feb. 17, 1918, he was the son of the late Thomas Samuel and Mary (Quinn) Lee.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, and a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay.
John was a member of the Canadian Navy and he served our country overseas with them during the Second World War from 1943-45. He was mainly self-employed throughout his life; he was an excellent carpenter, he could also turn his hand to any other project and fix anything that needed fixing. He was always ready and available when family or friends needed help.
He loved to skate, an activity he enjoyed up until he was 90, he also enjoyed picking berries, family camping trips and playing cards, especially 45s.
John will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Genevieve (MacDonald 'Cy'); four daughters, Karen Christoff, Nancy Lee, both of Glace Bay, Wendy Anita Lee and Lori (Terry) White, both of Kitchener, Ont.; son John (Brenda), Kitchener, Ont.; his loving grandchildren, whom he truly adored, Gwendolen Christoff, Craig Christoff, both of Kitchener, Ont., Carol-Ann (Brandon) Porter, South Carolina, Ryan Lee, Marie Lee, both of Kitchener, Ont., Jamie Lee Jackson, of Toronto, Ont.; great-grandchildren, Ivy McNeil, Glace Bay, Jayla and Jaysa Williams, Kitchener, Ont., and Lucas Porter, South Carolina; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents John was also predeceased by sisters, Mary Lee, Eileen (Henry) McDonald, brothers, Jimmy (Olive), Lionel (Vangie), Charles (Renee), Thomas (Carol), Adrian and Billy, son-in-law Gary Christoff, and twin granddaughters, Kayla and Sarah White.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. In honoring John’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral mass. Interment will be at a later date in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
At this time we would like to thank all of the VON nurses, and the nurses and staff at Taigh Na Mara, for the loving care and compassion given to our Dad.
