Alex MacLean, 91, of Sydney, formerly, Gabarus Lake, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
Born in Gabarus Lake, he was the son of the late George and Effie (MacDonald) MacLean.
Alex was a loving husband, father and devoted grandfather to his four granddaughters. He was a long-standing member of Zion-Wesley United Church, where he served as an elder. He worked for many years as a carpenter at Fortress Louisbourg. He was a fluent Gaelic speaker and a long-time member of the Mira Fiddlers.
He is survived by his sons, Bill, Montreal and Don (Judy), Pictou; four granddaughters, Heather, Halifax, Katie (Jamie), Toronto, Emily (Michael), New York and Alexa, Dartmouth; great-granddaughter, Adeline MacLean Stoltz, Toronto; sister, Mary MacDonald, Sydney.
Alex was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Annie, brother, John Neil, sister-in-law, Christene, brother-in-law, Donald MacDonald.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Myatt and Dr. Archibald and also to the wonderful staff at Williston House and the Spanish Bay unit at the Cove Guest Home.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday evening, Nov. 20 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will take place at Zion-Wesley United Church, Gabarus Lake on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Nancy Whitney-Latham, DLM officiating. Following the service, interment will take place in Zion Cemetery, Gabarus Lake. Reception to follow in the hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Zion-Wesley United Church Memorial Fund.
