Doris Eileen Blackwood (Hopkirk) (nee Thomas)
Passed on: November 29th, 2015
It is with incredible sadness that the family of Doris Blackwood announce her passing on Sunday, November 29th, after a seven year warrior's battle with lymphocytic leukemia. She was predeceased by her first husband, Peter Hopkirk, in 1977. Welcoming her with open arms and sadness at her far too early arrival are her Mom and Dad Dulcie and Jack Thomas. She leaves to mourn her loving husband Jeff, daughter Heidi Hopkirk, sister Deanne Peters (Geoff), brother Trevor Thomas (Anne-Marie), nieces and nephews Mark Peters (Nicole), Heather Peters (Sean), Lana (Des), Dylan and Steven and grand-nephews and grand-nieces Clara, Lewis, Elliott, Sophie Rose, and Anna. Also brother-in-law Curtis (Daphne), sister-in-law Ruby (Tom), and Jeff's children Stephen (Kelly), Stephanie (Arthur) and step-grandchildren Katelyn and Lauren. She will be missed by her many friends and neighbours both here and in their winter home Sunset Palms-Pinellas Park, Florida. Doris greatly enjoyed her card game Queens, and because of her success and aptitude for the game, was aptly named "Queen of Queens". Her buddies and Queens' players, Rosalie, Cheryl, Lorraine, Marilyn, Lucille and their spouses, whom they played against, will miss her terribly. Her lifelong pal Carol Papaierotheos (Badcock) in Greece will always be remembered for her tremendous friendship from childhood, as will Suzanne Davies. Doris was a long-time successful real estate agent in both residential and the commercial aspects of the industry and was responsible for much of the commercial development on Kenmount Road. She has now finished her career with the company she spent most of her time with, Sutton Real Estate. Doris was also an accomplished artist, with her work hanging at home, here, as well as in Florida, and with other family members. Our sincere thanks to Doris' medical team and the nursing staff at 4NorthA, HSC. In keeping with Doris' wishes, cremation will take place. Visitation will be Monday, November 30th, 7-9 pm, Tuesday 2-4 pm, 7-9 pm, at Barrett's Funeral Home, Hamilton Avenue. Service will be conducted at Gower Street United Church on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2 pm, with inurnment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery to follow. Doris was an avid gardener, and thus flowers will be gratefully accepted. Donations may be made in her memory to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or to a charity of one's choice.
