It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Doris Loretta Burt on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015 at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Doris had been a resident of Seaview Drive in North Sydney for many years until just recently, when she moved to the guest home due to failing health.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Gordon) Penny.
Doris had worked for many years as a salesperson with Meloney’s and Family Footwear in North Sydney.
She was a member of St. Joseph parish in North Sydney and the CWL. In younger years Doris had been a leader with 4H and involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. She enjoyed dancing, knitting and was an excellent cook and baker.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Betty Lou (Robert) Grant of Grand Mira South, by her two grandchildren, Janley (Cory) Holeha, Robert Grant; her three great-grandchildren, Olivia, Paige, Addison; by her sister-in-law, Eileen Penny of North Sydney and her nephews and nieces, Leo Penny, Pam Morrison, Frankie Penny, Brenda Penny and Wayne Penny.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Tom Burt; four brothers, William, Daniel, Leo and Ken; her sister, Eileen and infant sister, Leona as well as her companion, Ron Todd.
Visitation for Doris will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will take place 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
