Edgar Duncan MacTavish died Dec. 4, 2015, at the Dartmouth General Hospital at the age of 91.
Born in Sydney, where he lived most of his life, he was the son of Perley and Christena (MacKay) MacTavish.
After graduating from Sydney Academy in 1942, Edgar spent three years in the Canadian Army and then he attended and graduated from both, Mount Allison and Acadia universities. A dedicated and respected educator, he began his career at Thompson High in North Sydney in 1950 before transferring to Sydney Academy in 1953, where he remained until his retirement in 1989 as principal. The Academy held a special place in Edgar's heart and he was proud and honoured to have been a part of its history.
He was an avid member of the Sydney Curling Club, the Lingan Country Club and was a card-carrying member of the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club. He also served for a time on the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Commission. By vocation and avocation, he was a keen follower of world affairs, current events, and politics. Edgar was a man of tremendous integrity balanced by a razor-sharp mind and wit, which he retained until the end. As a husband and a caring and constant father, he gave much more than he ever took.
Predeceased by Renee, his loving wife of 60 years, he is survived by a daughter, Wendy and a son, Stuart, both of Dartmouth. He is also survived by sister, Thelma MacGregor of Pasadena, California and sister-in-law, Bea MacTavish of Ottawa and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred and brother, Clyde.
Cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held at a later date.
