Beatrice Day Davenport (Tommie) Moore
Beatrice Day Davenport Moore (Tommie) passed away peacefully in Halifax on Friday, December 4, 2015 at the age of 93. Tommie was predeceased by her husband of 53 years John Carmen Gailey Moore and her sister Frances Davenport Hayden. She is lovingly remembered by her 3 sons and their families, John and Karen, David and Carol and Craig and Chris and 7 grandchildren; Julie, Hannah, Martha, Sam, Tom, Maegan and Kate in addition to her nieces and nephew and their families in the United States.
Born in 1923, Tommie spent her early years growing up in North Carolina and Boston and enjoyed exciting travel adventures to Africa, Europe and the Middle East as a young woman.
She studied at Wellsley Womens College before working at Harvard University, where she met her husband. Johns career in geology brought them to a Northern New Brunswick mining town where they began raising their family, eventually settling permanently in Sackville NB. Her outgoing personality and graceful manner allowed her to become active in the community and she cherished many lasting friendships. Her focus was on family and friends but she was also deeply passionate about the arts. She loved to write and she spent endless hours painting and creating beautiful crafts and jewelry. She was a very compassionate person and always mindful of other peoples needs.
An independent woman with a tremendous sense of adventure, her love of travel punctuated the rest of her life and that of her children.
Her lifelong bond with her sister in Boston led to deep family ties and many cherished family gatherings between the Hayden’s and Moore’s.
Ten years ago, following the loss of her husband, she relocated to Halifax and thoroughly enjoyed making new friends in Parkland Estates and being close to some of her family.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Brunswick Street Mission (brunswickstreetmission.org) or Sackville Food Bank (foodbanksnb.com).
