Elbert Orr
George Elbert Orr
July 7, 1926-December 20, 2014
Elbert was born in New Glasgow, P.E.I. on July 7th, 1926 to Miller and Hannah (MacKenzie) Orr, the second youngest of four boys. With the death of his mother and infant brother when he was three, Elbert was raised by his Aunt Gertie and Uncle Warfield Orr, on their farm on the Snowie Road.Elbert finished school at 15 to work with his Uncle Warfield on the small mixed farm. Over time he established a hog operation with his son Gordon.
Elbert liked to go to the local dances where he met his wife, Shirley MacKay of New London. They married on June 23, 1954 and the Saturday night dances or playing cards with friends became a ritual. They raised three children, Nancy, Gordon and John, and were kept busy with their school, sports and community activities.
Elbert was a School Trustee, a 30 year Volunteer Fireman with the New Glasgow Fire Department, a member of the PEI Hog Commodity Marketing Board, the PEI Land Use Commission, an elder and on presbytry in his church, and was a 41 year member and past Master of the Prince of Wales Lodge # 18. Elbert and Shirley were one of the six couples who operated the New Glasgow Lobster Suppers until 1979.
Elbert loved to travel, whether to Florida with friends, out west to visit his brothers, to Ottawa or New York to see John, or just the weekly Sunday drive around the countryside. He loved hockey and was an avid supporter of the various Junior, Islander and Panther hockey teams, where he met and made many friends over the years.
Elbert watched the news, read the paper from cover to cover and was well versed in what was happening around the world in political and current events.
Elbert and Shirley celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary, shortly before Shirley’s death in October, 2004. He was proud of each of his children, welcomed his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth to the family and was especially proud of his granddaughters, Jennie Ellen and Megan, who he traveled with, took out to eat and went with him to events when Shirley was no longer there.
When his health deteriorated and he was faced with difficult surgeries, he never gave up, faced each challenge with hope and was always looking to the future. Elbert was heard to say on many occasions that he had 88 good years and that was a lot to be thankful for.
Greatly missed by daughter Nancy, sons Gordon (Elizabeth), John and granddaughters Jennie Ellen and Megan
