Regrettably, we announce the passing of Daniel MacKinnon on Dec. 16, 2015. He passed away unexpectedly at home in Sydney Mines.
Born in Sydney Mines on Feb. 20, 1947, Dan is the son of the late John Daniel MacKinnon and the late Loretta Jean MacKinnon.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his loving wife, Donna (Wilkie) MacKinnon.
Dan graduated from Sydney Mines High in 1965 and then went on to Acadia University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education. He taught for a short time in Moncton and later returned to Sydney Mines with the Northside-Victoria District School Board. Most of his remaining career was spent teaching at Memorial High School in Sydney Mines.
Dan is survived by his daughter Kerri of Sydney Mines, and sons, Joel (Gerrian) of Ottawa and Nathan (Apple) of South Korea. He is also survived by his brother Alan (Ruth) of Whycocomagh; his five sisters, Judy (Paul) Williams of Moncton, Norma (Eric) Jordan of Dartmouth, Joyce (Bill) Whalen of Utah, Heather MacKinnon of Sydney, and Connie (Peter) Kaiser of Dartmouth. Dan is also survived by his two grandchildren, Jude and Myra MacKinnon. Also mourning his loss is his life-long friend and cousin, Kevin Capstick of Sydney Mines.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Daniel Bond MacKinnon will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. at J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
Donations in memory of Daniel MacKinnon may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Sunset Funeral Co-operative, Margaree Valley.
