BEERS, JONATHAN LEWIS
February 27, 1936 to December 30, 2015
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jonathan Lewis Beers of Burton, NB, on December 30th, 2015. John “Sonny” was born in Chipman, NB, on February 27th 1936, to the late Jonathan “Daunt” and Regina (Bishop) Beers.
Left to mourn his loss are the love of his life, Brenda Breen-Beers; his children, Greg Beers (Inga), Pamela Beers-Sturgeon (Armond), Nina McCarthy (John), Joseph Gilbert (Jess); his grandchildren that meant the world to him – Josh (Julie), Mercedes and Mckenzie; his much-loved sister, June Baker (Doug); and his extended family and friends.
John served with the Royal Canadian Regiment and was a veteran of the Korean War. Upon returning to the Miramichi area, he continued his 44 year career with the Department of National Defence at the Renous Depot. John then worked at various bases in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and ultimately served out his career as the Base Fire Chief at CFB Gagetown from 1980 to 1996. His years as Base Fire Chief were ones of great pride. He always said that he only looked good as a chief because of the great firefighters who worked with him.
John enjoyed many years of retirement, taking up karate, riding his motorcycle and his ATV, woodworking, building and caring for his home/castle/The Dew Drop Inn, digging flower beds (Brenda would say “Dig here.” and John dug!), playing cards, and watching Jerry Springer with his best friend and brother-in-law, Brock Davies! Every day he would say, “It’s a great day to be alive!” He lived each day to the fullest, loving nature, his dogs Sadie, Tilley, and Bella, and most of all, his family. “And that’s a fact!”
John touched the lives of many and all that knew him knew that he was a man of honour and dignity with a capacity for true love. It is that true love that will be missed so very much.
The family would like to especially thank all nurses and staff at the Veterans Health Unit for their loving care and also thank Dr. J. Moore, Dr. P. Fraser, Dr. M. McKinnon, and all nurses and staff at the Oromocto Public Hospital.
There will be no visitation as per John's wishes. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Monday, January 4th, 2016 at 11:00 am with Fr. Antonio Reyes as celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Veterans Health Unit or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Personal condolences may be offered through www.oromoctofh.com, 357-5100.
