It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Carl MacRae, 83, on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Port Bevis, Victoria County to the late George and Janie (MacDonald) MacRae in 1932.
He came to Sydney Mines in 1950. Carl was a member of Holy Family parish. Most of his career was spent working with CN Marine, retiring in 1994.
Carl was an active participant in life taking great joy in following his family from baseball and soccer fields, to basketball courts and hockey rinks. His love of the outdoors took him from the woods of Boularderie to camping on the shores of his beloved Ingonish with Rita and his family.
Carl and Rita enjoyed many a crib game at his kitchen table and he was a regular at the North Sydney Fire Hall for Tuesday night crib.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rita (Cullen) and their children, Mary Louise (Paul) Bowne, Kevin (Danette), Kenny (Cathy) and son-in-law Dave Guy. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Bonnie (Justin) Hickey, Erin (Scott) Gouthro, Stuart, Patrick, Curtis, Kendra, Jenna, Emily and his five beautiful great-grandsons, Liam, Owen, Ryan, Ben and Max. Also surviving are sisters, Dorothy, Isabel (Robin) Grant and brother Harold (Sheila) as well as many extended family members.
Besides his parents, Carl was predeceased by his daughter Carol Ann, infant daughter Elizabeth, brothers, Murray and Maurice.
Special thanks to Doctor Michel McKeough and Louise for their years of care and support, as well as the emergency room staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Visitation for the late Carl MacRae will be held today (Monday, Jan. 18) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St, Sydney Mines. A funeral mass to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
