It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Mary Cashin, on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines on Jan. 27, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary (McShane) Baxter. Having lost her mother at the tender age of three, it was her older sister Agnes who, at the age of 13 became Mom’s second mother, and Mom loved her dearly.
Mom worked at the former St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in housekeeping for many years on the 4th and 5th floors, which she really enjoyed.
Mom was a warm, loving person who enjoyed simple things in life. One of her favourite things was making Sunday dinner for her family, along with their favourite desserts, especially her apple pie and homemade fudge.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Linda (Wayne) Rendell, Bras d’Or, Ruth Ann (Neil) MacDonald, Sydney Mines and sons, Paul (Laura), Tiny, Ont. and Frank (Judy), Mississauga, Ont. Also left to mourn are her precious 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; her sister, Rose MacIntosh, Oakville, Ont.; brother, Bill, Guelph, Ont., numerous nieces and nephews, and one special friend, Ruth Boudreau and daughter, Jessica, who are more like family.
Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her husband, Richard; sisters, Agnes and Annie and brothers, John, Alex, Charles, Richard and Bob.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise for their care and support over the years, and to all the staff on 4 East, 5 East and 2 West for their kindness, care and compassion for ‘Nan’ over these past seven months.
Visitation for Mary Cashin will be held on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A funeral mass celebrating her life will take place Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. A reception will be held in the parish hall, following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, or a charity of one’s choice.
