Born 1929, died peacefully on February 11, 2016, after a struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Beverley Diamond, his daughter Alison Jennings, his son John and wife Amy Smith, granddaughters Jillian and Trinity, and grandson Evan and his wife Crystal Mann. He will also be dearly missed by Terry Diamond, her husband Stephen Martin and daughter Emily. One of Canada's best-loved composers, Clifford Crawley had an impact on all sorts of music-makers from children to professional performers. Born in England, he earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music from the University of Durham, as well as a Fellowship at Trinity College, London and he was an Associate of the Royal College of Music. He was a school teacher and Principal Lecturer in Music in the British College of Education before moving to Canada where he taught at Queen's University for over twenty years. Since moving to Newfoundland in 2002, he has written new works for a wide range of performers, including colleagues at Memorial University, Newfoundland traditional musicians, and local school choirs. He is known for his brilliant orchestration, his musical wit, and his conviction that humour and profundity can easily coexist. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
