We are saddened by the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born in 1922, Rex was the last surviving child of Dorman Gillard and Monica Flynn (Corner Brook). He left home at a young age to sail with the Merchant Marine and later with the Royal Navy Rescue Tug Service during WWII. Wounded on D-Day, he returned to Newfoundland at the end of the war and married Ethel Smith who predeceased him in 2012. He leaves behind his children Paul (Gayle), Paula (Roger), Glenn (Gayna) and Glenda (Keith); his grandchildren Geoffrey (Barb), Sarah (Neil), Gerald (Tanya), Andrew (Christine), Philip (Shannon), Matthew and David; and his great-grandchildren Aidan, Ryan, Megan, Seán, Finn, Olivier, Raphaëlle, Ella, Alexa and Sophia. He left today for a journey who knows where. We only hope that there's a salmon river there. We send our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion who took such loving care of Rex. No visitation by request.
