It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly loved husband, father and grandfather, Roderick Thomas (Tommy) Dwyer, on Saturday, March 26, 2016, in West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Grimsby, Ont.
Born in New Waterford on Dec. 25, 1935, he was the son of the late Thomas and Rita Dwyer.
Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Irene Dwyer, Grimsby, Ont.; daughters, Tracey (Eric), New Waterford, Tammy (Ryan), Calgary, Alta.; sons, Terry (Suzie), Liscomb, and Timmy (Lori), Halifax; daughter-in-law, Jeanne, Oromocto; stepson, Michael (Amanda); stepdaughter, Lisa Ann; and grandchildren, Tiffany, Eric, Cody, Christopher, Cece, Holly, Amy, Roddy and Benjamin; adopted grandchildren, Emma and Aidan; sisters, Eileen (Carl), Ontario, Reynelda, New Waterford; as well as many nieces, nephews and a large circle of friends.
Besides his parents, Tommy was predeceased by his first wife, Cecelia Irene (Ropek) Dwyer; son, Daniel Thomas (Butchie) Dwyer; stepdaughter, Denise and brother, Reggie Dwyer.
Before retiring from a 28-year career as a member of the New Waterford Police Department, Tommy also spent a number of years serving in the army overseas, working in the coal mines and as an entrepreneur running a family operated restaurant, Tom’s Pizza Parlour. Known for his incredible sense of humour and love of cooking, fishing and the outdoors, he had a wide circle of friends throughout Cape Breton, Ontario, and in later years, even internationally. Tommy was respected as a no-nonsense kind of guy when it came to his duties as police officer and was the last police officer in Canada to be officially armed. Most importantly, he was a loyal family man, a Cape Bretoner through and through, and will be dearly missed by those left to mourn his passing.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Tommy’s life will take place in New Waterford at a later date, to be announced.
