Sister Hilda MacKinnon died peacefully on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the CND Health Care Center, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, N.S., on Oct. 29, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Stephen N. and Mary Ann (MacDonald) MacKinnon.
Hilda entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1946 and made profession in August, 1948.
Immediately following her religious profession, Hilda began her career as an educator in Whitney Pier, where she remained for the next 16 years, teaching both at Villanova and Holy Redeemer Boys School. From 1964 until her retirement in 1983, Hilda taught in local area schools, including New Victoria, St. Michael’s, River Ryan, Sheriff Junior High and Holy Angels High School, Sydney. Hilda loved her years in the classroom, forming a strong and lasting bond with both students and fellow teachers.
Upon retirement from the teaching profession, Sister Hilda worked for several years with the Diocesan marriage tribunal in Sydney. She then returned to St. Martin’s Convent, New Victoria, where she served as local leader and bursar for nine years.
In 2003 Hilda moved to Holy Angels Convent, Sydney, and continued serving her community in various capacities. Wherever Hilda’s ministry took her, her compassionate and loving nature endeared her to the many people she encountered.
In 2008, Hilda moved to the CND assisted living facility at Holy Redeemer Convent and later to the CND Health Care Center. To all those who so lovingly cared for Hilda as her health declined, we extend our heartfelt appreciation.
Sister Hilda is survived by one sister, Doris (Michael) Laffin, New Waterford, and by one brother, John, Toronto. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Cecilia, St. John’s, Nfld., Delories, Sydney, and Friederike, Phoenix, Arizona.
She was predeceased by sisters, Evelyn Roach, Claire Della-Calce, Sr. Regis, CND and Irene MacAdam and by brothers, Wilfred, Michael, Ronald, Stephen, Father Leonard and Gordon.
Hilda was much loved and will be dearly missed by her many nieces, nephews and their families.
