KEATING, Mary Genevieve (April 2, 1939 - February 4, 2009)- It is with great sadness that we announce the so quiet and gentle passing of our mother, wife, grandmother, aunt and great-aunt, Mary Genevieve Keating (nee Smith) of St. John’s (formerly of Avondale) on February 4, 2009 at the Palliative Care Unit at the Miller Centre. She would have been 70 years on April 2. She is survived and will be sadly missed by her husband, Dominic. She was such a loving mother to daughters Marie Keating of St. John’s, Mary Anne Keating of St. John’s, and her son Joe Keating of Georgetown, Ontario. She will be greatly missed by her grandson Joey Keating who she raised like a son, and also will be sadly missed by her granddaughter Carla Maddigan of Alberta, her brother Joe Smith (Violet) of Avondale, and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. By her side to the end also was her best friend and sister-in-law Ellen Smith of Avondale. Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation Friday from 12 noon - 9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Then resting at Hickey’s Funeral Home, Holyrood, Saturday from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass on Monday, February 9, at 2 p.m. from Assumption Church, Avondale. Interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery, Avondale. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the family or the SPCA. Our Mom had many friends around the city and around the bay. In her earlier days she worked at the old general and St. Clare’s. She worked as a volunteer at Daybreak for many years and she thought a lot of all the people there including the workers and parents. She was an avid listener of VOWR and she loved to call in and speak to her special friends there everyday. She loved her family in Avondale and she always spoke of the kindness of her nephews that they gave her everytime she was there. Mom opened her heart to many people in her lifetime and she was such a kind hearted woman to all that knew her. Her memory of life’s events and “who was who” was unbelievable. She will be greatly missed by all, but we are glad that she is no longer in any pain. And we are to be sure that she is an angel looking down on us and smiling,“It’s OK now, I am at peace and I am no longer afraid.”
