Verna Elizabeth (Fisher) MacRae, passed away peacefully May 16, 2016, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Estmere, N.S. in 1939, she was the daughter of the late George & Vera (Oakley) Fisher. In 1956, she married her loving husband, Neil MacRae and they resided in St. Patrick’s Channel and raised seven children. She moved to Baddeck in 2003 and resided there until her passing.
She is survived by her son, Charles (Cindy) MacRae, Baddeck; daughters, Doreen (Terry) Richardson, New Glasgow; Ruthie (Peter) Fleuren, Bible Hill; Joyce (Gerard) MacRae, Baddeck; Mary (Albert) Myers, Middle River; Beverly (Graham) MacKenzie, Baddeck; Sherri (Dave) MacRae, Middle River; sisters: Catherine (Norman) Beson, Blues Mills; Nellie MacKinnon, Blues Mills; Alice (Ronnie) MacLellan; St. Patrick’s Channel; Judith MacKinnon (Antigonish); Georgina MacLeod, Estmere; 19 grand children; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents, George and Vera (Oakley) Fisher; husband, Neil K. MacRae; nephew, Donald William MacRae and niece, Ronda Lee MacLellan-Hudson.
A loving sister, aunt, mother and grandmother she will be warmly remembered and greatly missed for her dedication to her family. She had a great appreciation for all of her children and grandchildren. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy and gave her a twinkle in her eye whenever they were present. She had many friends and good bingo companions and they will also miss her presence.
As per her wishes, there will be no visitation. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May19, 2016, at Farquharson Memorial Presbyterian Church, in Middle River, with Rev. Alison Etter presiding. Burial will be in Middle River Cemetery. Family flowers only by request, donations to be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre or to the charity of one’s choice.
