William MacAulay

Born In: Sydney

Passed in: Dartmouth
Passed on: July 14th, 2016

William ‘Bill’ A. MacAulay, age 82, of Dartmouth, formerly of Sydney, passed away at his home on July 14, 2016.
He is survived by his wife, Sheilagh ( nee O’Neil); sons, Peter (Cynthia), Dartmouth, Scott, Ottawa, Terry (Nancy), Whitby, Ont.; daughter, Laurie, Halifax; his sister, Gladys (Chick) Dawson, Sydney and grandchildren, Jenna and Alex MacAulay, Andrew and Ryan MacAulay, Eric Dooley, Julian MacAulay-Spence and great-grandson, Emerson MacAulay.
He was predeceased by his sister, Mary (Kenny) MacDonald and parents, William and Christina.
A loving father and grandfather, he enjoyed time with his family at his cottage on the Mira River. He was constantly back and forth between his sons’ hockey and his daughter’s basketball games. An avid do-it-yourselfer, he enjoyed working and creating in his backyard workshop.
Bill graduated from Mount Alison University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and St. Francis Xavier University with a Master of Adult Education. He worked for several Sydney area businesses as an accountant before being hired by the Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology (NSEIT) as coordinator of the Business Technology Program, maintaining that leadership role with the College of Cape Breton, later UCCB, where he served on the Board of Governor’s Executive Committee as well as taking on many other service roles. He was, for example, instrumental in the design and implementation of the university’s first degree, the Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies, his son Terry being a graduate of the program. Nationally, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges.
Upon retirement, he taught part-time at the Adult Vocational Training Centre in Sydney and expanded his volunteer community involvement. Bill made many good friends during his years as an educator and volunteer.
Bill served as an elder at St. Andrew’s United Church, Sydney, and was a cub and boy-scout leader. He was an assistant coach of a little league baseball team as well as of the Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology hockey team.
One of his main passions was the Sydney Y’s Men Club where he served as president, treasurer, treasurer of the Sydney Y’s Men’s Christmas Cheer Fund, treasurer of the Maritime Region Y’s Men’s Clubs and treasurer, Canada Area, Y’s Men International.
He and Sheilagh moved to Dartmouth in 2010 to be closer to family, where they became members of Woodlawn United Church and Bill joined the Kiwanis Club.
He will be missed. The family would like to thank the Victorian Order of Nurses and the Dartmouth palliative care team who were so wonderful in Bill’s care.
There will be a private family celebration of his life. No visitation. His ashes will be returned to his beloved Cape Breton at a later date.
Donations in Bill’s memory can be made to the Sydney Y’s Men’s Christmas Cheer Fund, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Victorian Order of Nurses, or to a charity of choice.
