Margaret Hartley

Passed on: August 14th, 2016

Margaret May Hartley, age 90, passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at the Palliser Regional Care Centre with her family by her side. Margaret was born on October 27, 1925 at the Moose Jaw General Hospital, the only one of nine born in a hospital, to Abraham and Margaret Buckmaster. Margaret grew up at the family farm near Brownlee, Saskatchewan. Her niece, Eileen, grew up more like a sister as Margaret's two older brothers had drowned before she was even born. Seventeen years later, Margaret returned to Moose Jaw to become a Registered Nurse. While in training, Margaret was sent to Fort San where she met the love of her life, Gordon Hartley. They were engaged on May 24, 1947; Gordon was discharged from Fort San on March 17, 1948; and on August 24, 1948, they were married. Two nurses were overheard, "It will never last!" (Only 70 years of true love!) They moved to Swift Current. Margaret worked at the "Old" Swift Current hospital, travelled as a Public Health nurse in the south west area around Swift Current, and then became the nurse, X-ray tech and lab worker for Dr. Keene. They were blessed with three children, Dawn, Scott and Jim. While working for Dr. Falkingham, another child, David, was born. She retired from nursing in 1968. Margaret was always sewing - clothes for the kids, Mother & Daughter contests and costumes for skating and Frontier Days. She loved gardening and flowers - especially gladiolas and roses. Mom loved cats - even the stuffed ones! Contests were entered and she usually won them with her prize baking and cooking, crosswords, puzzles and writing poems and articles. Margaret and Gordon travelled the world visiting 32 countries plus most of Canada and a lot of the United States. Everywhere she went, she "collected memories" with her camera. Sometimes these pictures were put onto canvas with her oil paintings or drawings. A wedding or birthday never went by without Margaret decorating the cakes - anniversaries of her siblings were celebrated in fashion with her gorgeous masterpieces. Family was a priority to her and she treasured every moment with them. The Church meant a lot to Margaret as she was on many committees. Sunday School lessons and even some sermons were delivered to the congregation. Church teas, bazaars and fall suppers were important as well. The last few years, Parkinson's disease took its toll on Mom. The Palliser staff were very kind and helpful to Mom as well as the family. Margaret was predeceased by her parents, 5 brothers and 3 sisters, and 3 step brothers and a step sister. "Margie" is survived by her beloved husband, Gordon; her daughter, Dawn (Jim) Rogowski and their children, Chrystal (Steven) Carman, and Michael (Erin) Rogowski (Kiana and Emberlynn); her son, Scott (Terry) Hartley and their children, Thomas, Sarah, and Emily; her son, Jim (Chrystal) Hartley and their children, Danielle (Dean) Schaitel (Mila and Piper), and Derek (Nikki) Hartley (Peydence, Raeya, Amaya) and her son, David and his children, Jenna and Connor (his child, Lily); her "niece/sister", Eileen George; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Mom will be forever loved and deeply missed. Donations in Margaret's memory may be made to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 610 - 19th Ave N.E., Swift Current SK S9H 2Y5. A memorial service was held at 2:00 on September 3, 2016 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Interment Service will take place at a later date. Warren's Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
