We are sad to announce the passing of Kenneth MacKenzie, age 92 years, of Baddeck N.S on the morning of September 20, 2016.
Ken was born in New Harris, N.S. on June 11, 1924 the son of the late Catherine (Gunn) and Kenneth Angus MacKenzie. Ken graduated from the Maritime Forestry School in 1950 and began a career in
the forestry industry retiring from Stora Forest Industries in 1989. Always involved in the community of Baddeck, he was a member of the Baddeck Volunteer Fire Department for 46 years, retiring after serving 11 years as Fire Chief. He was a member of the Baddeck Lions Club, St Mark's Masonic Lodge No. 35, served as a Baddeck Village Commissioner and was a member for many years of the Board of Managers of Knox Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed the Bras d'Or Lakes whether on his boat or working on race committees for the Bras d'Or Yacht Club of which he was a life member. Golf was another of his passions and he was a founding member of Bell Bay Golf Club and the Baddeck Curling Club. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Jennie and Eric, he was their biggest supporter attending many of their soccer, hockey and basketball games. Ken is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie (MacDermid); daughters, Margo (Ian) Buchanan, Burlington, Ontario, Sylvia (John) Pearo, River Denys, N.S.; grandchildren, Jennie (Willie) and Eric Nicholson, Halifax, N.S. and their father, Ian Nicholson, Baddeck, N.S. He is also survived by his sister, Sadie Hoover, Ottawa, Ontario; niece, Lynn Hoover, Ottawa, Ontario and nephew, David Hoover, Deer Lake, Newfoundland. Also survived by sister-in-laws, Florence Lang and Nancy Langley both of Baddeck, N.S. Ken was predeceased by brothers, Johnnie, Harry and Wilfred MacKenzie; sister, Dollie MacLennan and infant son. Visitation for the late Ken MacKenzie will be held on Friday, September 23, at the MacAskill's Funeral Home, Baddeck, N.S. from 3-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 24, at 2 p.m. in Knox Presbyterian Church, Baddeck with Rev. Brian MacLeod officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall.
