It is with sadness and heavy hearts that the family of the Late Major Vera Dicks announce her peaceful passing at the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge, St. John's on Friday, September 30, 2016. Predeceased by her father Herbert Dicks; mother Ella Dicks; brothers Edwin and Carl; niece Verna Pennell (Gordon) and dear friend Ethel Windsor. Leaving to mourn, niece Mona (Merrill) Goodyear of Deer Lake, extended family and a large circle of friends. Vera spent a lifetime serving her Lord and Savior and worked tirelessly for the Salvation Army in many capacities. She was trained at the Salvation Army Newfoundland Training College in the Kings Messengers Session and was commissioned on July 9, 1948. Major Dicks retired on February 1, 1982 with 68 years, 2 months and 21 days of faithful service. The family will be receiving friends from 7pm-9pm on Saturday, October 1, 2016, and 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm on Sunday, October 2, 2016, at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John's, NL. Her Promotion to Glory service will take place on Monday, October 3, 2016 from the Salvation Army St. John's West Corps, 174 Mundy Pond Road, St. John's at 2pm. Major Terry Feltham officiating. Interment will follow at the Salvation Army Cemetery, Blackmarsh Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Canadian Bible Society.
