Constance (Connie) Jean MacDonald
Today our world went quiet when Mom was called home to her heavenly home at age 90. Connie was surrounded by her loving family as she left her home on earth from the Northside Community Guesthome. Connie was born in Glace Bay, NS, to Moses and Ruby Roberts but spent the majority of her life on Brown Street in Sydney Mines, NS. She was the smallest of the twin girls and her parents put her in the oven to encourage her to thrive. And thrive she did. Connie was an avid skater, swimmer, card shark and baker. Nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She would bake fresh rolls and taught everyone how to play Skipboo. She loved to laugh. Everyone she met left feeling that much better for just knowing her and how she made them feel. Mom was a warrior. She faced cancer head on twice beating breast and colon cancer. She was the strongest woman we all knew. She may have been meek and mild but her determination, fight and gentle soul inspire us all to try to be better, to do better.
Mom is survived by her loving family, Ian, Stuart (Linda), Bill (Alice), Corrine (Wayne), Sandra; grandchildren; great grandchildren; brother, Bud (Minnie) Roberts; sister, Lois Gordon; sister-in-law, Jeannie MacDonald; brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Pat MacDonald and her many nieces and nephews. Connie was predeceased by her loving and ever present husband of 64 years, Doug; her twin sister, Gwen Henrich and her husband, Charlie; brother-in-law, Russell Gordon; daughter-in-law, Diane; brothers-in-law, Edgar and Horace MacDonald and sister and brother-in-law, Todd and Shirley Hickey. A special thank you for outstanding care, understanding and compassion is extended by the nursing staff and CCAs at the Northside Community Guesthome (MacEachern Place, Teresa Terrace). You made mom’s days a little brighter. To Connie’s faithful care attendants Karen, Peggy, Shauna and Ruth Anne – no words can ever say thank you for the time and companionship you offered to mom. Singing songs, talking for hours and just holding her hand brought her so much comfort and knowing that you were there when we couldn’t be was amazing. To Dr. Paul Hickey, thank for your loving care of your Aunt Connie. Heartfelt appreciation and thanks are extended to our Church family and friends. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at Connie's request. A memorial service celebrating Connie's life will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 1 p.m. at St. John’s United Church, Bras d’Or with Dianne Kempt, DLM officiating. Donations in Connie's memory may be made to St. John’s United Church, Alzheimer’s Society, and Canadian Cancer Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
