Constance Teresita Furlong (nee Carew)

Born: April 24th, 1926

Passed on: October 28th, 2016

Passed peacefully away at Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence, with her family at her side, on October 28, 2016, aged 90. Predeceased by her husband Myles, her parents William James and Mary Florence, and her brother Archbishop William Aquin Carew. Leaving to mourn daughters Anne and Christine (Myles), sons William (Erin) and Jordan (Joan); grandchildren Evan, Caroline, Maddie, Niall, Aidan, Robert, Eileen, Claire, and Thomas; sisters Helen Carew and Frances Powell; sisters-in-law Alwynne Furlong, Carla Furlong, and Mary Fantina; and many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, whom she deeply loved. Those closest to her will miss her profoundly, none more than her sister Helen, her best friend, constant companion, and loving support throughout the last years of her life; Eileen Collins, her friend and partner in laughter of more than 80 years; and Patricia Callahan, who added so greatly to Connie's happiness over many years. The family are especially grateful to Dr. O'Shea and all the staff at Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence for their excellent care and the affection that sustained her. Connie will be remembered and her passing mourned by too many people to count, but most particularly by the members of "Club", the group of schoolgirls who remained fast friends from their earliest years at Our Lady of Mercy over the long decades of the twentieth century and beyond. Connie was a source of joy and light to all who knew her. She was a devoted wife to Myles for their 55 years of marriage, a caring mother to her four children, a dedicated sister to her siblings, and a steadfast friend to innumerable people throughout her life. The common thread was love, rooted in her Roman Catholic faith and expressed through her countless works of mercy and charity, her tireless attention to the good of her family, and her cheerful generosity and smiling hospitality, the door to Connie's and Myles' home was always open. She selflessly served her Church as president of the Catholic Women's League, as secretary to Archbishop Alphonsus Penney of the Archdiocese of St. John's, and as coordinator of the Sacred Heart Messenger in Newfoundland. She was an early member of Newfound Sound Women's Barbershop Chorus, delighted by the opportunity to raise her lovely voice in song. By turns a singer, a poet, and an artist, she was confidant, counselor, and comforter. There was no one like her. Her life was long, often very happy, and, until the last few years, marked by exceptional health and spirits. Her illness limited her activities but never impaired the loving radiance of her heart, nor wore out her great patience. She was funny, sharp, kind, quietly but deeply talented, and capable of sparks of fire. Though her condition gradually undermined her physical health, it did not take her from us mentally, she was always, resolutely, effortlessly, herself. For this, as for so much else in her life, we are eternally grateful. She was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure, until we all meet again in the world to come. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road, St John's. Visitation to be held Tuesday, 1 November, 7-9 pm, and Wednesday, 2 November, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 9:30 am, Thursday, 3 November at the Basilica of St. John The Baptist. Interment to follow at Belvedere Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
