JOHN DOUGLAS IVES
November 28, 1949 - October 28, 2016
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Doug. Though he was undergoing cancer treatment for a number of months, he still maintained his unmistakable brand of humor, creative drive and gentle spirit
A native of Vancouver, Doug also lived in the Kootenays before first coming to the Coast in 2005 to attend Inside Passage School of Fine Woodworking where he spent a total of three years.
Not only was Doug a highly skilled woodworker ("the quintessential cabinet maker"), but he often combined his talent with his unique sense of humour by turns wry, whimsical or macabre. It showed in some truly memorable creations that were part of various exhibitions. He was also the curator for a wonderful woodworking show at Gibsons Public Art Gallery.
Music and theatre were also a part of Doug's world. He wielded his ukulele with great enthusiasm and Doug and his truck, "Big White", were major stagecraft contributors to the productions of Driftwood Players for the past six years. He took to the Sunshine Coast arts community like a duck to water, and the arts community embraced him as a woodworking artist, a dependable volunteer, and a very good friend. Doug, who touched so many, will be sorely missed.
Doug is survived by his cousins, Norm (Judy) Hill and Dorothy Turnbull, nephews/nieces Darren and Kevin Hill, and Chris and Wendy Turnbull. Doug will also be missed by his Kamloops family, Nathan and Amanda Hearts.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug's memory can be made to the Inside Passage School of Fine Woodworking in Roberts Creek.
A celebration of Doug's life will take place Saturday, November 5th at Gibsons Public Art Gallery from 12-2pm. Bring your stories, memories, music or whatever you are moved to share.
