SUTHERLAND, Doris
Caribou River - Doris Annabell (Hansford) Sutherland - 97, of Caribou River, passed away peacefully, Sunday November 6, 2016 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
She was born in Pictou on April 7, 1919, a daughter of the late John and Mary Jane (Sencabaugh) Hansford.
Doris was a dedicated wife, a loving mother, grandmother, great (great) grandmother. Her true joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren and each one has many memories of her love. Her home was always filled with the aroma of fresh baked goods and the warmth of the wood stove. She loved to have a house full of family and friends for a game of cards or family music.
After raising her family and extended family she worked at National Sea Products, a job she truly enjoyed. Doris liked traveling to visit family and a special trip to Disney World in Florida. Although she enjoyed her travels, she was truly happy spending 77 years on the farm in Caribou River.
Doris is survived by her sons, Gerald (Darrell), Caribou River; Aulden (Florence), Lyons Brook; Larry (Mary Louise), Caribou River; daughters, Elizabeth “ Betty” MacArthur, Caribou River; Phyllis Lewis (Dave), Acton, Ontario; Diane Demone (Lormer), Acton, Ontario; daughters-in-law, Jessie Casey, Pictou; and Ellen Fanning, New Glasgow; sister, Elizabeth Grant, Abercrombie; along with 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, James “Austin” and sons, Amel and Ricky; 5 sisters and 6 brothers. Visitation will be held 6-9 PM Wednesday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral will be held 2 PM Thursday from First Presbyterian Church, Pictou, with Jacquie Ross officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cariboo River Upper Cemetery, the Multiple Sclerosis Society or Canadian Cancer Society.
