Geoffrey Ellis Peters

Passed on: November 15th, 2016

Geoffrey Ellis Peters passed peacefully away on November 15, 2016, in the presence of his family at the age of 76. He is remembered by his wife Deanne (Thomas) with whom he recently celebrated joyfully the 50 years of their marriage, their son Mark (Nicole), their daughter Heather (Sean Macneill) and their five wonderful grandchildren - Clara, Lewis and Elliott Peters and Sophie and Anna Macneill. He will be greatly missed too by his brother Douglas (Marilyn); his sister Margot Evans; Deanne's brother Trevor Thomas (Anne Marie); brother-in-law Jeff Blackwood; their children and by the larger Peters family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Wilfred and Gertrude (White) Peters; his brother-in-law John Evans; and Doris Blackwood, his sister-in-law. Gregarious and outgoing, Geoff was a friend to all he met - and he met many people over a long and productive life. Born in St. John's he was a proud graduate of Holloway School and Prince of Wales College. Many of his schoolmates became life-long friends, some from their days together in grade one. He played hockey with the Guards, with coach Howie Meeker, and learned to play golf as a teenager with his father. (One highlight of his later life was playing four rounds of golf at Augusta National, home of The Masters.) He became a sailor; he, Deanne and their children spent 24 years exploring Newfoundland's bays with fellow members of the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club. Geoff worked for many years at Peters and Sons Ltd., as part of the fourth generation of the Peters family to do so and then as President of Pharmaceutical Supplies Ltd. He also gave back much to the community. A dedicated Kinsmen and President of the St. John's club, he was honoured with a life membership in Kin. He became Commodore of the RNYC and in later years a member of the St. John's Rotary Club and an active member of Radio Station VOWR. He especially treasured hosting VOWR's live early morning Christmas Day program for many years. Gower Street United Church was an important part of Geoff's entire life and he was an enthusiastic member. Deanne, Mark and Heather, and Geoff's family, invite all who wish to join them at Gower in a service to celebrate his life on Saturday November 19th, at 11:00 AM. Visitation at Barrett's Funeral Home on Hamilton Avenue on Thursday November 17th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, and Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in his memory to Gower Street United Church or to VOWR. Please visit www.barretts.ca to sign the memorial guest book.
