Passed on: November 28th, 2016
It is with deep sorrow and a great sense of loss that we announce the death of Sister Haidee MacLellan, CND. Sister Haidee died on November 28, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, following a brief illness. Sister MacLellan was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on April 4, 1932, to Alexander A. MacLellan and Jessie A. MacLellan. She is survived by her sister, Mabel Brunelle and two nieces, Claire and Ann. She was predeceased by five brothers, James, Herman, Gordon, Arthur and Arnold, as well as two nephews. Sister Haidee made profession in the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1952. Following her years of studies she began her professional career in teaching, counselling and administration in the schools in Antigonish, Mabou, Port Hood, New Waterford and Sydney. In all of these areas Sister Haidee will be remembered for her complete dedication to her ministry of education. In 1991, Sister Haidee made a career shift and chose to study Canon Law at St. Paul University, Ottawa. Upon completion of these studies she worked as Administrator/Collegial Judge in the Matrimonial Tribunal in the Diocese of Antigonish and as Coordinator of the Renewal Program in the Diocese. She was later appointed Chancellor of the Diocese of Antigonish. She served in this capacity from 1999-2004. All those with whom Sister Haidee had occasion to work will attest to her giftedness and her ability to deal with whatever challenges and projects presented themselves.
Sister Haidee’s expertise was not limited to the classroom and official responsibilities; she was actively involved with numerous community and professional groups. She also found time for many co-curricular activities – educational tours, student projects and publication. From 2004 to 2011, Sister Haidee devoted herself to community services at Holy Redeemer Convent and Holy Angels Convent. In 2011, she moved to Parkland Cape Breton, a Residence for Retirement Living. Retirement was not a role that she cared to play, so she continued to accept whatever responsibilities were requested of her until sickness stepped in, in the form of cancer, a battle she could not overcome. At Sister Haidee’s request, there will be no visitation. Celebration of her life will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 5th with Reverend John Barry officiating. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
