Born in Westcock New Brunswick the son of Zabud and Blanche (Ehrhardt) McLeod and was one of nine children all of whom predeceased him except his sister Rhoda Tasker of Ottawa Ontario. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Kathleen McLeod (nee MacDonald) and his daughter Joanne Elisabeth Matthews. He is survived by his sons John C. McLeod (Debra Holland) of Royal Westmoreland, Barbados and David A. McLeod (Shirley) of Hopeall, Newfoundland, six grandchildren Dr. Christopher Matthews (Alison) of Aptos California, Richard Matthews Brentwood Bay British Columbia, Kristy McLeod Vancouver British Columbia, Amy McLeod Halifax Nova Scotia, Andrew McLeod (Kate) Vancouver British Columbia and Dr Robert McLeod Sydney Australia and two great grand-children Charlotte Matthews California and Thomas McLeod Nova Scotia.
Charles was a graduate of Sackville high School and Mount Allison University Academy and became a certified management accountant and was appointed president of the Nova Scotia chapter in 1960 and chairman of the national convention in 1963.
During his business career he worked for what is now the Canada Revenue Agency and several Nova Scotia companies including National Sea Products where he was chief accountant. In 1954 he joined William Stairs Son and Morrow, one of Canada’s oldest companies, where in 1971 he was appointed general manager. He purchased a controlling interest in the company in 1972 becoming its president and CEO. In 1975 he sold his interest in William Stairs Son and Morrow to JW Bird & Co. where he remained as vice President until his retirement. Charles was a director of NS Tractors and Equipment Ltd, Maritime Warehousing and Transfer Ltd, A.M Bell and Co Ltd, CP Moore Ltd. He also served as president of CHAMP Investments Ltd, and vice president of Atlantic Equipment Ltd and Venture Wholesalers Ltd.
He was active in many community organizations including the YMCA where he served as president of the Halifax YMCA and was honored with the Red Triangle Award and was made an honorary life member of the Y. He was a founding member and past chairman of the Saraguay Club. A founding member of the group which financed and built “The Elms” the United Church retirement home in Windsor Nova Scotia. He served as director of The Halifax Club, the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Ashburn Gold Club, the Nova Scotia Cancer Society and the Halifax Protestant Youth Association where he was vice president.
His family and his many friends at Amica Beechwood where he spent the last 16 years many of whom attended his 100th birthday party in May will miss him greatly.
