Gerald Francis (Jerry) MacGillivray

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Francis MacGillivray, 81, in the early morning hours on Saturday, December 24, 2016, at the Northside General Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born in New Glasgow on November 7, 1935, he was the son of the late Angus Bernard and Theresa (Lewis) MacGillivray. Jerry was the meat manager at the Bras d’Or Co-op for many years until his retirement.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish and Immaculate Conception Parish in Sydney Mines. He served as Eucharistic Minister for over 25 years. He was also a member of the parish council and bereavement committee at Immaculate Conception Church. Jerry was a lifetime member of Santa Maria Council 2024 Knights of Columbus. He served in many positions over the years. He also served as district deputy for this area and was a member of the state provincial committee for over 20 years.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carolyn (MacDougall); son, Bernard, Dartmouth; daughters, Cathy (Rob) McNaught, Surrey, BC, and Theresa, Sydney Mines. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Katie MacGillivray, who was the light of his life. He was always so proud of her.
Jerry is also survived by his sister, Marie Crispo, Monastery, NS; brothers, John (Heather) and Jimmy, Ontario; brother-in-law, Alfred Rogers and sister-in-law, Vera MacGillivray. Besides his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Dana (Dicks) MacGillivray; sisters, Lois Monaghan, Joan Piercey, Helen Rogers and Diane Jesty, and brothers, Mick, Joseph, Gerald and Bernard in infancy. We would like to thank Dr. Eugene Ignacio and Danielle. You always did everything you could for him. We so appreciate the care. To the staff of 5 East, Northside General, the care and kindness you showed Jerry will never be forgotten. To say thank you just doesn’t seem like enough. Jerry was a true gentleman. He would never hurt a soul. Always there whenever anyone needed help. Family was everything to him. Da would always go when needed. We will miss him terribly. Cremation has taken place. It was his wish that there be no funeral. A committal service will take place at a later time.
