Best: Rena Marie Best was born July 6, 1967 in Swift Current, SK. She passed away January 25, 2017 in Swift Current, SK. A Celebration of Life Service was held February 4, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the Palliser Pavilion. Her forever friends participated in the service: Shelley Holmes was the celebration leader, Jenny Wright sang "Return to Pooh Corner" and "Tennessee Waltz", Jodi Tonnies gave the life tribute and Vicky Stenberg and Stacey Smith read "Forever Friends", "The Rainbow Bridge" was also read by Taryn Schwartz and Terilyn Sim. Special thanks to cousin Rob Kinnard for piping Rena in one last time and friends Doug Sawatsky, Al Hudec and Gord Nodge for accompanying Jenny with the songs. The Power Point was provided by McAyla Krauchek and the ushers were Doug Sawatsky, Greg Pastuk and Charlie Shaheen. The Urn Bearers were Keith Best and Laurie Peru and candles were lite by Melinda Snodgrass and Rhonda Kurtz. Rena is survived by her husband Kelly Nelson, children Kalven and Ellie Nelson, father Bill Best, sister Laurie (Marty) Peru, brother Keith (Judy) Best, mother-in-law Shirley Nelson, brothers-in-law Norman Nelson and Randy (Kathy) Nelson, sisters-in-law Janice (Roche) Rumple and Sandy (Terry) Krauchek and numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her mother Berle Best, father-in-law Marvin Nelson and nephew Steele Davie. Rena attended school at Central School, Irwin School and the Comprehensive High School in Swift Current, where she helped manage the 84/85 Arden's Basketball Team to a "perfect season". While finishing school, Rena worked for the Swift Current Answering Service and the Aquatic Centre. Following high school, Rena's love of people would take her to a lifetime career in the service industry. She was employed at Checker's and Smiley's lounge before spending many years at Elmwood Golf Course in the summer and the Swift Current Curling Club in the winter. Rena always said that her years at Elmwood and the curling club were some of the best of her life, where friendships made with co-worked and patrons were lifelong Friends. Rena met her lifetime partner, Kelly Nelson, in the spring of 1990, when she allowed him to walk her home one night from Thumpers Night Club. She then blessed his life by deciding she would spend the next 27 years with him. Rena told Kelly he had to make an honest woman of her in 2002 before the arrival of their first born, Kalven. She kept her last name, Best, because she joked that if she added Kelly's last name, she would really be the "Best-Nelson". Their second child Ellie arrived in 2007. Rena became a life time Mom, managing hockey and baseball teams, volunteering for school functions and camping at Thompson Lake in the summer. Rena was diagnosed in August of 2015 with stage four colon cancer and given three months to live. True to her spirit she quietly set out to battle this disease but unfortunately, 18 months later, she succumbed to it. She remained passionate about all that she loved, her family, friends, Toronto Maple Leafs, golf, camping, puppies, dark sunglasses, the color Lime Green, girls night out and weekends at the cabin until the end. Rena and her family would like to thank everyone who shared in her life and her death. In her memory, a trust fund for her children, Kalven and Ellie, has been setup with TD Canada Trust.
