Rhoda Atkinson

ATKINSON, RHODA MAE - 83, Clark’s Harbour, formerly of Woods Harbour, passed away Friday, May 19, 2017, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital, with her family by her side. Born March 14, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Rhoda (Wamback) Nickerson. She is survived by her loving husband of over 60 years, Bruce Atkinson, Clarks Harbour; brother, Fred Rogers “Roddy” Nickerson, Woods Harbour; sister, Gloria (Irwin) Pless, Brookline, MA; sons, Douglas Atkinson, Clark’s Harbour; Davis Atkinson, Clark’s Harbour; daughters, Susan (Paul) Christie, Port Saxon; Deborah Knowles, Barrington Passage; grandchildren, Deven, Meghan, Morgan, and Conor; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her step-father, Douglas Nickerson; brother, Neil (Ina) Nickerson; and granddaughter, Shannon Mae Knowles, who she loved dearly. Rhoda Mae was a caring and sweet lady who gladly devoted her life to her family, the church, and the community. She was a full-time and substitute teacher for many years. She was a dedicated member of the Stone Church, where she was a faithful pianist for over 50 years, gathered bouquets of fresh flowers for the communion table every Sunday for more than 35 years, served as the Church Clerk for 10 years, and was a long-time committed member of W.M.S., holding multiple positions. She was also an active member of several committees, notably the restoration of the stained glass windows in the church sanctuary. Rhoda Mae was known community wide for her thoughtfulness and generosity. She had a love for the piano from a young age, and played for weddings, funerals, cantatas, and as a fill-in for various churches. She had a passion for cooking and baking for her family and for others, enjoyed flower arranging, gardening, and time spent with the family at the cottage at Sandhills. Her main focus was her family, and she especially adored the involvement she had with her grandchildren. She enriched the lives of her family and all that knew her and will be deeply missed. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Barrington. The memorial service was held on Wednesday, May 24, 2 p.m., at the United Baptist Stone Church, Clark’s Harbour, with Pastor Adam Renouf officiating. Family flowers only.
