August 24, 1923 - April 18, 2008. Sally died peacefullyat the Health Sciences Centre, in the presence of her loving family, of complications brought on by pneumonia. To the last instant, Sally lived a life full of wonder and joy, sharing her wit and charm with all who were around her. She will be affectionately remembered as an inspiration, as well as our rock by family and friends here and Eastern Canada. Growing up in Grates Coves, NFLD at 18, she left and went to New Jersey to live and work until, at the age of 23 she came home for the summer, and met the love of her life, Ray. They courted in summer and were married in the fall. Sally pursued a career with the Newfoundland Legislative as a Hansard Librarian which brought her into close contact with all the colourful characters of political life in the late 50's through to the '80s.When husband Ray retired from The Telegram to start out the '80s, Sally followed suit and they both retired to winter in Florida to pursue their passion for travel and to enjoy the warmer climate. Her later years, were spent enjoying the company of her life long partner, watching her son's business develop and the zest and promise of her grandchildren, great grand children, nephews and nieces. Sally was a life long member of the I.O.D.E., member of Toastmasters, and had a passion for crossword puzzles, gardening and Auction 45. Sally leaves us each with good memories to savour as we remember her spirit. She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years Ray (93) and their BIG BOY "Keith", his wife Claudine, Janis MacGillivray (Burdock), the mother of their two grand children, Christiaan and Heidi (Glen Hubley), and three great grand children, Jordaan, Kiannah, and Kamryn; and two step grandchildren, Genelle and Jean-Yves (Joleen), and one great grand step child Jorja. Sally will also be remembered by her sisters, Peggy (Dave Butler), Jean (Ralph MacGillivray - Ray's brother), brother Dolph Benson (Stella) and brother-in-law, Jack Hutchings. She was predeceased by her brother Wally Benson (Marion) and her sister Pearl (Jack Hutchings). Also, Sally always cherished the memories and visits of her several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to those angels Nikki, Peggy and Corrine who always seemed to know when they were needed without being asked and to Janis and Heidi who kept in touch regularly from Nova Scotia. Heartfelt thanks for the love and excellent care of the 4th floor (North/South) doctors and nurses of the Health Sciences Center, who prolonged Sally's life so that family and friends could wish her a loving goodbye. Donations to the Kirk Building Fund, are encouraged in lieu of flowers. Visitation will be at Carnell's Funeral Home on Monday, April 21st, 2008, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services to be held at Kirk Presbyterian Church, Longs Hill, Tuesday, April 22nd, at 2 p. m.
