Gladys Gertrude Porter, age 89, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center.

Born in Amherst in 1920, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Caroline (Finnigan) Rhindress.

Gladys was a member of the First Baptist Church and the A.P.A.G.E. Club. She was a member of the Amherst Golden Years Society. Gladys was the first lady to work behind the counter at the Amherst Post Office. She loved to fish, was a kind and wonderful woman who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Gladys will be sadly missed by her grandsons, Rick McKay, Bridgewater, Scott McKay, Dartmouth, Dale McKay, Ottawa; 4 great grandchildren, Krista McKay, Jeffery McKay, Timmy Hickey, and Craig Hickey; sister Bernice Chapman, Amherst; brothers Robert, Amherst and Benjamin, Trenton, NS.

She was predeceased by her husband Ernest F. Porter in 1988 and daughter Shirley McKay.

Arrangments have been entrusted to the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Church St., Amherst, NS, (902-667-8777). Her funeral service will be held from the Furlong Jones Chapel, 68 Church St., on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 2 pm. Friends and family will gather for a time of visiting from noon until the time of the funeral at 2 on Tuesday. Burial will take place in the Amherst Cemetery in the spring.
