Verna Marie Locke 76, of Brookfield, Colchester County, passed away peacefully, Friday, May 4, 2007, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Brookfield, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence "Tom" and Florence "Flo" (Carter) Matheson. Verna was a member of the Brookfield Baptist Church, a member of the WMS Ladies Auxiliary and a Life Member of the United Baptist Women's Missionary Union of the Atlantic Provinces. She was very active in the work of the Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served as Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, Church Clerk as well as on other boards and committees. She was also a member of the Brookfield All Around the Circle Seniors Group.Verna was a "people person" with a particular interest in children. Her exemplary devotion to and interest in her family was reciprocated by their unending devotion to her. Her interests were many including, church, community, flowers, birds, wildlife, sports, quilting and current affairs. She brought smiles to the faces of many with her keen sense of humour. Verna is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Donnie; loving daughters, Jane Kenrick (Brian) of Middle Stewiacke, Margaret Anne (Margie) Little (Brad) of New Maryland, NB; sons, Rick (Wendy), Stephen (Krista) both of Brookfield; seven dearly loved grandchildren, Julie, Brett, Elizabeth, Beckie, Emily, Charlene, and Cody. Also survived by sisters, Wilma Avila of California, Edna Graham (Ed) of Brookfield, Letha Mowatt of Bible Hill; brothers, John (Lynn), Hugh (Judy) Winston (Ruth), Gordon (Myrna), Vaughn (Donna), all of Brookfield; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law Marjorie Illsley, Ruth Colburne (Leon); brothers-in-law Frank Locke (Barbara), Glen Locke (Shirley), Keith Locke (Eldora). She was predeceased by a brother Ken, sister-in-law Rita Purdy and brother-in-law Wayne. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Sunday in the Mattatall Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 7 at 2 pm in the Brookfield Baptist Church, Brookfield with Rev Adam MacGregor officiating, assisted by Rev. Frank Locke and Rev. Dr. Brad Little. A private family burial will take place earlier on Monday at Brookfield Westside Cemetery, Brookfield. A reception will follow in the church hall.
