Born: April 8th, 1926

Passed on: April 22nd, 2008

April (nee Vaughan) Berezowski, passed away on April 22, 2008 at home surrounded by her loving family. Born April 8, 1926 in Isfield, Sussex, England, she was the devoted wife of the late Steven Berezowski; loving mother of Anthony (Gloria) and Peter (Collette). She was grandmother to Karen (Fred), Adam (Natalie), Nicholas (Carrie), Charles (Natalie) and great-grandmother to Holly, Noah and Ava. She is also survived by her sister, Audrey; brother, Gordon and many loving nieces and nephews in our close extended family in England. She was predeceased by her husband, Steven; brothers, Ted, Allan and Jeff Vaughan. April and Steve settled in St. Catharines, Ont. in 1946 and raised their family with the love and support of Steve’s brothers and sisters and many lifelong friends. They followed their children to Nova Scotia in 1977, settling in Maitland. April was known as “The Cookie Lady” by the children and teachers of Maitland District Elementary School where she volunteered as a teacher’s assistant for many years. Mum came to Canada as a British War Bride in 1946 and promptly became a very proud Canadian. During the Year of the War Bride at the age of 80, Mum embarked on a new career as a public speaker. She felt she had a great deal of historical knowledge about life as a War Bride and it was important for folks to hear about it. There will be no visitation at the family’s request. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m. in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with sons, Anthony and Peter officiating. Reception to follow the service. Family flowers only. Donations in April’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26 or a charity of choice. Special thanks to all the wonderful nurses at the Victorian Order of Nurses and Ann McKim of the Palliative Care Unit at the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro.
