Donald Fenwick Folkins

Born: October 5th, 1934

Passed on: August 4th, 2008

Donald Fenwick Folkins died of pancreatic cancer at the Colchester Regional Hospital in Truro, N.S. on Aug. 4, 2008. Family was with him. Don was born on Oct. 5, 1934, in Moncton, N.B. to parents Ethel B. (MacNevin) and Stewart E. Folkins. His brother, Douglas, died in his youth. Don will be remembered with much love by his wife Ilze, daughters Susan (Winston Smith) and Miriam (Andrew Taylor), and sons Peter, Ian and Tali, grandson Liam Taylor, and sister Joan Honeywell. Don graduated with a BSc in chemistry from Mount Allison University, and with an MDCM from Dalhousie University Medical School. He received an FRCP(C) in internal medicine in 1967. From 1972 to his retirement in 1999, Don worked as an internist/cardiologist at the Colchester Regional Hospital. He loved his work. He held various positions with the Nova Scotia Medical Society and the Colchester hospital. When Don and his family moved to the Truro area from Halifax in 1972, they bought a country property. Here, with enthusiasm, Don joined his family in learning to care for hayfields and apple trees, horses, ponies and goats. Music was a lifelong love. Don was a strong believer in physical fitness for adults and children, and he and his family spent many happy hours orienteering and cross-country skiing in Wentworth. On his retirement, Don planted a one-acre vineyard on his property, where he lovingly tended each vine until June of this year. The family would like to thank Don’s nurses and doctors at the Centennial Hospital in Halifax and at the Colchester Regional Hospital in Truro, and friends and neighbours. Everyone has been kind. Cremation has taken place. Donations in memory of Don may be made to the Colchester Regional Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice. To remember Don, a gathering of family, friends and neighbours will be held on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the family home on 283 Debert Beach Rd., Lower Debert. All welcome. May the funny, happy times and the Cobequid breezes be with you, Don.
