MIDDLE?STEWIACKE?– Douglas Mackenzie Kenrick, 88, Middle Stewiacke, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, with his family by his side. Born in Brookline, Mass., on June 25, 1920 to Frank and Ellen (Mackenzie) Kenrick. Doug moved to Middle Stewiacke at the age of three and became a lifelong citizen of his beloved Stewiacke Valley. In 1941 Doug married the love of his life, Marian Dickey. Doug worked in the family general store all his life, starting out with his father when the store was known as F.O. Kenrick and Son. After the War, Doug was joined by his brother, Richard and the store became known as Kenrick Bros. People came from one end of the Valley to the other to shop there, but mostly enjoying the camaraderie and light-hearted banter always provided by Doug and Dick. Doug was always very involved in his community, serving as the church’s janitor and also as a church elder for many years. The store was sold in 1982 and retirement years were kind to Doug and he often enjoyed his favorite pastime, walking or cross-country skiing in the woods. When his grandsons could join him, it was darn near perfect. Doug is survived by Marian, his best friend and wife of 67 years; his daughter, Kathy, Fall River; close family friend, Mary Jane Vaughan, Fall River; grandsons, Tim Stewart, Prince George, B.C. and Brad Stewart, Gagetown, N.B. He is also survived by his sisters, Edith Chesterman, Ellen (Reg) Saunders; sister-in-law, Helen Kenrick. Doug was predeceased by his brother, Richard and his brother-in-law, Tom Chesterman. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Dec. 8 in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Memorial service will take place at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9 in Middle Stewiacke United Church with Rev. Larry Harrison officiating. Burial will be in Middle Stewiacke Cemetery.
