
Dr. Arthur John Wort

Dr. Arthur John Wort, MBBS (Durham), FRC Path, LMCC, FRCP (C), 83, Upper Stewiacke, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 in QE2 Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Fordingbridge, England, on March 26, 1924, he was the eldest son of Frederick and Agnes Anne Wort. During his school years, he attended Bishop Wordworth's School in Salisbury, English. Upon leaving school he apprenticed as a watchmaker, becoming a journeyman. Volunteering in 1942, he was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in the Fleet Air Arm, Royal Navy, achieving the rank of lieutenant (E). After the war, he attended Durham University Medical School, graduating in 1956. In 1968, he immigrated to Canada to accept the position of assistant bacteriologist at the Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto. Two years later, in 1970, he accepted the position of chief of microbiology at the IWK Hospital in Halifax, where he worked until his retirement in 1989. During this period, he also held the position of assistant professor of microbiology and pathology at the Dalhousie Medical School. Throughout his life, his keen scientific interest led him to many hobbies, including beekeeping and gardening. He will be remembered for his great thirst for knowledge, curious mind and love of teaching. He is survived by his wife, Joan (Shepherd), to whom he was married for 50 years; his sons, Jonathan (Rosemary) of Upper Stewiacke, and Andrew (Diane) of Dartmouth; grandchildren, John, Sarah, Gabrielle and Laura-Helene. He is also survived by his sister Ross (Edmund) Bacon of Fordingbridge, England. He was predeceased by his brothers George, James and Kenneth, all of England. The family wishes to extend their heart-felt thanks to the QE2 cardiac unit staff and the ICU staff at Colchester Regional Hospital. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007 in St. John's Anglican Church, Truro, Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. A reception is to follow in the church hall. Family flowers only. Donations to St. John's Building or discretionary fund or to the QE2 Foundation or a charity of choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
