Edward Lorraine

Hon. Edward F. Lorraine, 80, Onslow, passed away peacefully June 18, 2008 in Colchester Regional Hospital, with his family by his side. Born in Onslow, he was a son of the late Purley and Clara May (Graham) Lorraine. He was very involved in the farming industry, agriculture and politics. Ed was a lifetime farmer and feedlot operator. He was president of Eastern Livestock Sales from 1956-1970; a member and director of the Nova Scotia Cattlemen’s Association and president of the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition from 1973-1974 and 1987-1988. Ed was inducted into the Nova Scotia Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2004 and Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture Senate Club. He was also secretary/treasurer of North River Elementary School from 1956-1960 and was a member of the Colchester-East Hants School Board from 1972-1980. Ed was elected to the Municipality of the County of Colchester Council in 1972 and warden of Colchester County from 1973-1981. He was a lifelong member and supporter of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party and was elected as MLA for the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia where he served the constituency of Colchester North from 1981-1999. Ed was minister of Agriculture from 1996-1999. While in opposition, Ed served on various boards and commissions which included agriculture critic, transportation critic, natural resources critic and municipal affairs critic. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Margaret (Cooke); daughters, Heather (Stephen) Douglas, Janice (Ralph) VanZeumeren, Karen (Blaine) Odgen, Lisa (Edison) Patton and son, Jim (Tricia), all of Truro; grandchildren, Tyler, Brenna, Grant, Ross, Sidney, Camryn, Nicholas, Eryn and Gillian. He is also survived by his brother, Lloyd, Truro; sister Anne Haughn (Quentin), Halifax; sister-in-law Margaret Lorraine; brother-in-law, Charlie Hill. He was predeceased by sisters, Florence, Leta, and brothers Laurie, Hector and Jim. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 20 at 2 p.m. in First United Church, 711 Prince St., Truro with Rev. David Lutes officiating. Interment in Onslow Island Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 4-H Council of Nova Scotia. Arrangements entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro.
