Edward Thorneycroft Barley Jr.

MASSTOWN - It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of Edward Thorneycroft Barley Jr., our father and grandfather, on Sept. 6, 2008 after a lengthy illness. Edward was born on Dec. 22, 1919 in Masstown, son of the late Edward Thorneycroft Sr and Sarah (Dawson) Barley. He was an accomplished musician, having made a recording with Lone Pine and Betty Cody. During the 50s, he was a regular on Saturday Night Jamboree, which was broadcast over CKCL in Truro. Ed formed his own band "The Barley Boys" playing for dances on a regular basis for 50 years; family band members included his father, Ed Sr., son, Dave and son-in-law Bill Simpson along with many other local talented musicians. He was employed by the Department of National Defence, CFB Debert and later worked for the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 106, Debert, as well as being an associate and life member. He is survived by sons Dave (Dot), Shediac Bridge, N.B., Doreen (Bill) Simpson, Debert; Gary (Janet), Moncton; Reg, Doug (Connie) and Doug Lattie (foster son) Debert, 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, many cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Ivy Mosher in 2001. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. in the Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro, B2N 3W6. Rev. Don MacQueen will officiate with a reception to follow in the funeral home. A private family burial will follow in Folly Village Cemetery, Glenholme. Donations in memory may be made to Glen Haven Manor.
