SALT SPRINGS - It is with deep sorrow we announce the loss of a very kind and loving husband, father and brother, Laurie MacRae Maxwell, Salt Springs, Pictou County, who passed away Friday, August 10, at Valley View Villa, Riverton. Laurie was born in Halifax, September 3, 1922, son of the late Charles A. and Muriel (MacRae) Maxwell. He worked on the family farm in Mt. Thom during his youth, attended the local one-room school, and was an active member of the church. He was employed with the Department of Highways, Eastern Woodworkers, and as a heavy-duty machine operator during the construction of the local pulp and paper company. His last employment was with the former Pictou County School Board retiring in 1988 as janitor of the Salt Springs Elementary School. Laurie loved meeting people and took a keen interest in local politics. A love of animals, reading and flowers were among his favourite hobbies. He was at home in the woods and is remembered for his surveying skills. He is survived by his wife, Claire (Munroe); a daughter, Donna Maxwell-Fleet (Bob), Amherst, and son, Halley, Salt Springs; grandchildren, Lori McCullough, Edmonton, Carson McCullough, Six Mile Brook, and Janna McCullough, Northern Quebec; and one great-grandchild; a sister, Joy Robley, and sister-in-law Sybil Higgins. He was predeceased by a foster brother, Ross Higgins, and brother-in-law, Harold Robley. Cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. A service to celebrate and remember Laurie's life will be held Tuesday, August 14, at 2 p.m. from Eagles Funeral Chapel, Westville. Interment in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
