WESTVILLE – J. Garfield Sutherland, Westville, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro. He was 78. Born in Westville, he was a son of the late Edward Sutherland and Ina (Langille) Webb. He was employed with C.N.R. for 33 years, retiring in 1992, and was a member of the C.N.R. Retiree's Club. He was an elder of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Board of Managers and was a member of the church choir. He was also a former member of the Maple Leaf Lodge #21 Knights of Pythias. He is survived by daughters, Kay Grant, Pictou; Jane Smith (Peter), Salem; sons: Al (Mary), New Glasgow; Greg (Rose), Minnedosa , MB ; Robert (Debbie), Antigonish; nine grandchildren: Vicki Gerrior, Melissa MacDonald, Callum, Stephen, and R.J. Sutherland, Mandy Langille, Doug Sutherland, Alishia and Shauna Sutherland; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Downing and Shirley Tanner. He was predeceased by his wife, Agnes (DeYoung); a son, Owen in infancy; three infant grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Langille. Visitations will be held Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Westville, with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Burial will be in the Auburn Cemetery, Westville. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
