Lawrence "Larry" Saunders

Born: January 10th, 1949

Passed on: October 23rd, 2007

Lawrence W.E. “Larry” Saunders, 58, Yarmouth. Larry died in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, after a courageous struggle with prostate cancer diagnosed in December of 2005. His family was by his side in life and in death. Larry was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, on January 10, 1949. He was the son of the late Clayton and Anna (Wheeler) Saunders. Larry was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for 24 years, retiring in 1992 as Sgt. NCO i/c of the Yarmouth Rural Detachment. At the time of his death, he was employed with the Province of Nova Scotia, Department of Justice. The choice of professions was evidence that Larry hoped to make a difference in the lives of others. Larry derived much happiness from being with his family ... always the protector. He was a good son, brother, husband, proud father and ' Gampy'. He was very modest in his accomplishments and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He looked forward to the change in activities each season would bring ... the tranquility of fly-fishing to the challenge of snowboarding. He was an avid gardener, always willing to share his knowledge of nature's beauty with family, neighbours and friends. Early morning runs with his friends and ski ventures with family were very special to him. He volunteered his time over the years to numerous organizations and committees such as the RCMP Veterans Association, Saint Ambrose Parish Council, Scouts Canada, YACRO, and the Yarmouth Y Whitecaps Swim Club. The true measure of a man is in how he lived his life. He is survived by his wife, Jayne (Lawrence); daughter, Kristie (Edward) Stewart; grandson, Ian Stewart, Pictou; brothers, Stephen (Brenda) Grafton, New Brunswick, George (Edna) Kay Riverview, New Brunswick; sisters, Lorraine Ulch, London, Ontario, Janet Saunders, Woodstock, New Brunswick, Cathy (Gordon) Linder, London, Ontario. Larry was predeceased by his son Shaun Patrick, sister, Barbara Langille. Visitation will be at Sweeny's Funeral Home on Thursday, October 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 with prayers at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Ambrose Cathedral Friday 10 a.m. with Father John MacPherson officiating. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory of Larry may be made to the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Oncology Unit, the Yarmouth Branch VON or charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to sweenys@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guestbook online at www.sweenysfuneralhome.net “His life was gentle; and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, 'This was a man'.”
